This article examines portfolios to discover the implications of their application as an alternative method of assessment for vocational educators. The discussion focuses on the characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and types of portfolios along with the fields in which they would be most applicable and the ways in which they might be implemented. In light of the discussion it is argued that portfolios are particularly adaptable to vocational education and when maintained by students, important in career development as indicators for future employers of an individual's skills, abilities and achievements.
